Abstract

Plant-derived bioactive compounds have gained significant attention in modern pharmacological research due to their diverse therapeutic properties, structural complexity, and potential applications in drug development. For centuries, medicinal plants have served as important sources of therapeutic agents, and recent advances in phytochemistry, molecular biology, and pharmaceutical sciences have expanded understanding of their biological activities. Natural compounds obtained from plants, including flavonoids, alkaloids, terpenoids, phenolic compounds, and glycosides, exhibit a wide range of pharmacological effects through modulation of cellular pathways, oxidative regulation, inflammation control, and molecular signalling mechanisms.

The discovery and characterization of plant-derived bioactive molecules have contributed significantly to the development of therapeutic agents for various diseases, including cancer, cardiovascular disorders, metabolic conditions, infectious diseases, and neurological disorders. These compounds provide valuable opportunities for identifying novel drug candidates due to their antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, antimicrobial, immunomodulatory, and neuroprotective properties. Furthermore, advancements in extraction technologies, computational analysis, and molecular pharmacology have improved the identification and optimization of plant-based therapeutic molecules.

This review discusses the biological sources, classification, and molecular mechanisms of plant-derived bioactive compounds while highlighting their pharmacological applications in human health management. The role of natural compounds in modern drug discovery and therapeutic development is explored, including their contribution to targeted treatments and combination therapies. Additionally, challenges associated with natural product-based drug development, such as bioavailability, standardization, formulation difficulties, and regulatory considerations, are discussed.

Although plant-derived compounds present substantial therapeutic potential, successful clinical translation requires systematic investigation, advanced delivery approaches, and rigorous pharmacological evaluation. Integration of traditional medicinal knowledge with modern pharmaceutical technologies may accelerate the development of safe, effective, and innovative therapeutic agents. Plant-based bioactive compounds continue to represent an important foundation for future drug discovery and personalized healthcare approaches.
