Herbal drug development has evolved significantly through the integration of traditional medicinal knowledge with modern phytochemical research, biotechnology, and evidence-based medical approaches. Medicinal plants represent a valuable source of structurally diverse bioactive compounds that have contributed to the discovery of therapeutic agents for various health conditions. Recent advancements in analytical technologies, molecular biology, and pharmaceutical sciences have improved the identification, characterization, and development of plant-derived medicines.
Phytochemical research provides essential insights into the chemical composition and biological activities of medicinal plants. Bioactive compounds such as flavonoids, alkaloids, phenolic compounds, terpenoids, glycosides, and saponins demonstrate significant pharmacological properties, including antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, antimicrobial, anticancer, neuroprotective, and metabolic regulatory effects. Advanced analytical methods, including chromatography, spectroscopy, metabolomics, and computational approaches, have enhanced the discovery and optimization of herbal drug candidates.
Biotechnology has further transformed herbal drug development by enabling sustainable production, compound enhancement, and improved formulation strategies. Techniques such as plant tissue culture, metabolic engineering, synthetic biology, and nanotechnology-based delivery systems provide new opportunities for improving bioavailability, consistency, and therapeutic efficiency of herbal medicines.
The integration of evidence-based medicine has strengthened the scientific validation of herbal therapeutics through systematic evaluation of safety, efficacy, pharmacokinetics, and clinical outcomes. However, challenges including standardization, quality control, regulatory frameworks, limited clinical evidence, and herb–drug interactions continue to influence widespread acceptance.
This review explores recent advances in herbal drug development by examining the role of phytochemical research, biotechnology applications, and evidence-based approaches. Understanding the convergence of traditional medicine with modern scientific methodologies may contribute to the development of safe, effective, and globally accepted herbal therapeutic products.
