Abstract

Medicinal plants have been an important source of therapeutic agents throughout human history and continue to contribute significantly to modern healthcare research. The increasing interest in plant-based medicines has encouraged extensive investigation into the phytochemical composition, biological activities, and therapeutic applications of medicinal plants. Advances in phytochemical research, molecular biology, biotechnology, and analytical sciences have improved understanding of the active compounds responsible for the pharmacological effects of medicinal plants.

Medicinal plants contain diverse bioactive constituents, including flavonoids, alkaloids, phenolic compounds, terpenoids, glycosides, tannins, and saponins, which exhibit antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, antimicrobial, anticancer, neuroprotective, and metabolic regulatory activities. These phytochemicals interact with multiple molecular pathways involved in disease development, including oxidative stress regulation, inflammatory signalling, apoptosis, immune modulation, and cellular metabolism.

Modern healthcare research has increasingly focused on integrating traditional medicinal knowledge with scientific approaches to develop evidence-based herbal therapeutics. Advanced technologies such as metabolomics, molecular docking, artificial intelligence, and nanotechnology have enhanced the discovery, characterization, and delivery of plant-derived therapeutic compounds. These approaches have improved the identification of novel bioactive molecules and supported the development of optimized herbal formulations.

Despite significant therapeutic potential, several challenges remain in the clinical application of medicinal plants, including variability in phytochemical composition, standardization issues, poor bioavailability, limited clinical validation, and regulatory concerns. Addressing these limitations through advanced pharmaceutical technologies and systematic research approaches is essential for improving the acceptance of medicinal plant-based therapies.

This review explores the importance of medicinal plants in modern healthcare, focusing on phytochemical discovery, molecular mechanisms, pharmacological activities, therapeutic applications, current challenges, and future perspectives. Understanding the scientific potential of medicinal plants may contribute to the development of safer, effective, and sustainable therapeutic strategies for disease prevention and management.
