Abstract

Plant-derived antioxidants have gained significant attention in preventive healthcare due to their ability to regulate oxidative stress and protect biological systems from cellular damage. Oxidative imbalance caused by excessive production of reactive oxygen species is associated with the development of several chronic diseases, including cardiovascular disorders, cancer, diabetes, neurodegenerative diseases, and inflammatory conditions. Natural antioxidants obtained from medicinal plants provide valuable therapeutic opportunities because of their diverse chemical structures and biological activities.

Plant-derived antioxidant compounds mainly include polyphenols, flavonoids, phenolic acids, carotenoids, vitamins, tannins, and other bioactive metabolites. These compounds demonstrate protective effects through multiple mechanisms, including free radical scavenging, enhancement of endogenous antioxidant defence systems, regulation of inflammatory pathways, protection of cellular components, and modulation of molecular signalling networks. Their ability to maintain redox balance contributes significantly to disease prevention and health promotion.

Advances in phytochemistry and analytical technologies have improved the identification, characterization, and evaluation of plant antioxidants. Modern approaches such as metabolomics, molecular modelling, nanotechnology, and computational analysis have enhanced understanding of antioxidant mechanisms and therapeutic potential. Plant-derived antioxidants are increasingly investigated for applications in preventive nutrition, functional foods, nutraceutical development, and supportive healthcare strategies.

Despite their promising biological effects, several challenges remain, including variability in plant composition, bioavailability limitations, standardization issues, and the need for stronger clinical evidence. Improving extraction techniques, developing advanced delivery systems, and conducting well-designed clinical studies are essential for maximizing their healthcare applications.

This review discusses the phytochemical diversity of plant-derived antioxidants, their molecular mechanisms, role in preventive healthcare, therapeutic perspectives, current limitations, and future research directions. Understanding the biological potential of natural antioxidants may contribute to the development of effective and sustainable approaches for maintaining health and preventing chronic diseases.
