Abstract

Artificial Intelligence (AI) has emerged as a transformative technology in pharmaceutical research by providing advanced computational approaches for accelerating drug discovery, improving molecular prediction, and optimizing therapeutic development processes. Conventional drug discovery approaches are often associated with prolonged development timelines, high financial costs, and significant failure rates during clinical evaluation. The integration of artificial intelligence, machine learning, and deep learning techniques has introduced new opportunities for improving efficiency, reducing experimental limitations, and enabling data-driven decision-making throughout the pharmaceutical development pipeline.

AI-driven drug discovery utilizes computational algorithms to analyse complex biological datasets, identify potential therapeutic targets, predict molecular interactions, optimize drug candidates, and support personalized treatment strategies. Machine learning models can evaluate chemical structures, biological pathways, and clinical information to predict drug efficacy, toxicity, and pharmacokinetic properties. Furthermore, AI-based approaches have contributed to drug repurposing by identifying new therapeutic applications for existing compounds and reducing the time required for drug development.

This review discusses the fundamental principles of artificial intelligence applications in pharmacological research and examines its role in different stages of drug discovery, including target identification, molecular screening, lead optimization, toxicity prediction, and clinical development. The article further explores the applications of AI-driven approaches in cancer therapeutics, infectious diseases, neurological disorders, and precision medicine. The challenges associated with AI implementation, including data quality, algorithm transparency, regulatory concerns, and computational limitations, are also discussed.

Although artificial intelligence cannot replace experimental validation and clinical expertise, its integration with traditional pharmaceutical research methods provides a powerful framework for improving drug development efficiency. Future advancements in AI technologies, combined with high-quality biological datasets and interdisciplinary collaboration, may significantly enhance the discovery of safer, more effective, and personalized therapeutic interventions.
