The most common causes of gastric ulcers include H. pylori and gastric prostaglandin loss associated with the use of NSAIDs medication. Gastric ulcer formation depends on the presence of pepsin and acid secretions in gastric juice which breakdown the mucosal defences. It may be caused due to excessive stress or irregular food habits. Many synthetic drugs are used for the treatment of ulcer but they may have certain side effects. On the other hand, herbal medicines are completely safe and beneficial for treating ulcers. This review brings to light that the major incidence of gastric ulcer varies worldwide and the complications thereof put a heavy yet preventable burden on the healthcare expenditure. Some herbal plants helpful in the treatment of ulcer have also been discussed here.</p>
