The Chemical Constituents and Diverse Pharmacological Activities of Rosa damascena
Abstract
Rosa damascena as an ornamental plant is commonly known as ‘Gulab’ (Rose in English) in India. It is traditionally used to prepare Gulqand, a delicious sweet preserve of rose petals and sugar that has been in use since time immemorial as a delicacy in several Indian dishes. But in various Unani classical texts, it has been mentioned for having laxative, anti-ulcer, anti-inflammatory, cicatrisant, antiseptic, anti-aging, cardio-tonic, and exhilarant properties. Its various pharmacological properties such as antidiabetic, anti-HIV, anti-infective, antimicrobial, anti-obesity, antioxidant, anti-convulsant, anxiolytic, and hypnotic activities have been explored in recent times.
In spite of being so many pharmacological properties, Rosa damascene has so far not been known for its medicinal use. Therefore, all relevant databases and books on ethnopharmacology were probed and all the new findings on its phytochemical and pharmacological activities were collected, reviewed, and presented in this paper.
