Abstract

Pharmaceutical formulations are usually supplied in the form of emulsions for treating skin disorders and skin protection. This method of pharmaceutical treatment is thermodynamically unstable and needs to be stabilized by the application of an emulsifier. Emulsified solutions vary from lotions that have relatively low viscosity to more viscous creams. There are two basic types of emulsion, oil in the Water (O/W), and oil (W/O) water, respectively. Besides these two forms, there is another fairly complex emulsion, called multiple emulsions. Generally, emulsions have some benefits over certain types of treatment, as the solubilized drug could be more bioavailable. Besides, gastrointestinal problems and metabolic effect at the first pass are also avoided, oil in water (O/W), water in oil (W/O).
