Background
The rigours of medical education are well-known internationally, and medical students’ mental health morbidity is higher than that of their aged-matched peers [1]. No representative survey has yet been undertaken in medical college etawah. We undertook a cross-sectional survey to assess psychological well-being among them. The survey was open to all medical students in UPUMS Saifai. Descriptive statistics along with mean and standard deviation were performed.
Material and methods
The short form of the Ryff Scales of Psychological Wellbeing was included within the online survey designed for completion by young medical adults between the ages of 18 and 26 who were present in the classroom of medical college. Participants were assured of confidentiality. A total of 644 participants filled this form. The participants comprised 444 males, 200 females, and: 150 were from 1st year, 144 from the second year 140 from 3rd year 110 from final year, and 100 from the internship Analysis The data were analyzed by SPSS 24 using the frequency, correlation, factor, and reliability
Results
Among 644 around 50% of medical students had moderate psychological well-being and around 25% had both low and high psychological well-being.
When the subscales were considered, the majority of the students scored less on the dimensions of self-acceptance and personal growth. Students have done reasonably well on autonomy, positive relations with others, and purpose in the life dimension
Conclusions
This study reveals that medical students are going through exceptional stress when compared to their age-matched peers. More nationally representative studies must be conducted on a large scale to quantify the problem and to help design new interventions
